Getting More Jesus – Part V
"From Struggle To Sudden Success"

Study Text – John 6

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,
17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for
Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18
A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When
they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the
boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified. 20 But
he said to them, "It is I; don’t be afraid." 21
Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat
reached the shore where they were heading.

From time to time, all of us have had issues that we’ve struggled with.
Sometimes we’ve struggled too long and have wondered why?—why am I going
through all this turmoil? Well, a look at our text and the steps that the
disciples took clearly illustrates why we struggle instead of experiencing the
"sudden success" that God has in store for us.

Step 1 – Leaving Jesus Behind

In our text we see that the disciples went down to the lake and got into the
boat to head for Capernaum. It was dark and Jesus had not yet joined them. Now
notice this!! In the 16th verse there are two words used–
"went down." Obviously, there is no other direction to go without
Jesus. Another word we should take note of the 17th verse is
"dark." Psalms 119:105 states, "thy word is a lamp unto my feet,
and a light unto my path." Now if His words alone are a lamp and a light,
then surely His presence is the same. Without Him, know that you are going to
head downward into darkness.

Step 2 – The Storms Come & You Struggle

In the 18th verse we are told, "A strong wind was blowing
and the waters grew rough." What else should we expect if we leave Jesus
behind? Many of us can really testify to this. When we leave Jesus behind, it’s
basically "open season." The enemy sees us as that "deer in the
headlights," and he brings the storms in an attempt to sink us. Why?
Because the enemy is opportunistic. He can only move when the opportunity
arises, so don’t give him that chance.

Also we need to look at the 19th verse. It tells us that they
rowed for three or three and a half miles in this storm. Yes, these brothers
had some "hard rowing" for quite a while because they probably got
impatient and didn’t wait for the Lord. But here is a question I want to throw
at you. Why were they leaving Jesus? If they were followers of Jesus then
surely they should have waited for Him. It’s not like their electric bills were
late and they really had to get to Capernaum to pay them before the office
closed.

Step 3 – Jesus Comes Into Your Storm

Now once we get neck-deep into trouble and realize that Jesus is the only
way out, guess what? He Comes! Not only that, but nothing stops Him from
getting to you!!! Let me repeat that!! If you are in a storm right now, there
is NOTHING that will stop Jesus from getting to you. While the disciples were
in the storm, notice that Jesus had no boat, but that didn’t stop Him from getting
there. Whatever means He needs to take to get there, He will get there. If
you’re sinking in a relationship — He can get there!! If you’re sinking in
your job situation — He can get there!! If you’re sinking financially — He
can get there!! And when He does – STEP 4 comes!!

Step 4 – Sudden Success!!

Yes, my brothers and sisters, when Jesus shows up the "Sudden"
occurs; however there is something you have to do when He shows up — LET HIM
IN!!!! The 21st states, "Then they were willing to take him
into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were
heading." Look at this scripture again!!! It says that the disciples were
WILLING to take Him into the boat. If we let go of our limited ways and let
Jesus into every area, we will get what the disciples got – AN
IMMEDIATELY." The 21st ends with, "immediately the boat
reached the shore where they were heading" – IMMEDIATELY!!! (Note:
According to the map in my bible this was a 10-mile trip)

So if you want to reach the shores of a better job, don’t leave Jesus behind
in your professional life. If you are heading toward the shores of financial
stability, don’t leave Him behind in your tithes and offerings. If you are
seeking to get the most you can get out of your friendship or relationship or
marriage, definitely don’t leave Him behind in guidance. When you leave Jesus
behind, it’s open season on you, but when you allow Him in, it’s the season to
prosper.
