Unity in the Body of Christ- Part I

Will You Provide the Evidence?

John 17th Chapter
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

For the last few weeks, God has really placed it upon my heart to pray for unity within the body of Christ. What I’ve learned during this time of prayer and study is truly fascinating, to say the least. So over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing with you some tidbits on unity.

Now from this week’s text, we see a portion of Jesus’s prayer for the church, the body of believers that will come after the disciples. He says, “Neither pray I for these [the disciples] alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word.” Then Jesus goes on to explain why He is praying for the body of believers: “[t]hat they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me” (v. 21).

First, it was Jesus’ desire that we be one as He is one with His Father. His prayer was for us to have the same unity He was already operating in. Why? So that the world may believe that thou hast sent [Him]” (v. 21). In other words, our unity, oneness, harmony, and agreement is evidence that God sent Jesus! We must understand that when elements within the body of Christ begin to argue, get jealous, fall out, and fight, we kill our witness of Christ. We need to learn that kind words, caring hearts, and a unified body are the best witness of Christ that we could portray. That witness is what can draw someone else into the Kingdom.

We don’t have to act like crabs in a bucket, pulling each other down; instead, we need to focus on building each other up. You see, we need to be different from the world’s system and the world’s people. Let’s offer them something they don’t already have. In all honesty, why would a heathen get out of bed on Sunday just to see people treat each other to same way he sees them treat one another on Monday? Unity within the Body of Christ is what we should be showing to those who are lost.

My question today is can you show that unity by asking forgiveness of someone that offended you? Regardless of whether the offense occurred ten minutes or ten years ago, can you even look at the person and forgive him/her. Remember, the unity that flows through you is evidence that God sent His only begotten Son to this earth. You are the evidence, the testimony, and the witness all rolled into one. So will you hold on to your emotions, pain, and hurt simply to get even? Or can you forgive, live, and walk in unity in order to show someone that Jesus is real?

It’s up to you to provide the evidence.
