Limitless Expectation

Limitless Expectation

John 6th Chapter
28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

What is your expectation of God today? Are you expecting Him to do the same thing for you that He did yesterday? Do you expect Him to guide you through the McDonald’s drive-through to get the number four combo with a diet coke again? Or are you expecting Him to do a “new thing,” an exciting thing, a thing that will catch the attention of the person next to you or a neighbor across the street.

This week’s text gives us some insight on what Jesus desires to do in our lives. Our text starts by telling us that the multitude (that He fed from the two fish and five loaves of bread) asked Him to show them a sign so that they would believe Him (as if the two fish and five loaves weren’t enough). However, even when they asked for a sign, they asked for an “old sign,”not a new one. Let me explain.

The multitude asked Jesus to do something that God had already done. They asked Him for manna from heaven. Why? Was it because they recognized this act as a sign from heaven, or was it because they were limited in their expectation of God? Was the highest, most significant move of God in their lives something He did for someone else? Something way back when? Something they did not imagine themselves but instead heard about?

I would hope that the past is not the extremity of our expectation of God. If all we expect is what He did for mama dem’, then that’s not faith; that’s religion, not relationship. What God did for mama dem’ was a foundation, a launching pad, a starting point, and a stepping stone. We weren’t supposed to park on it or pitch a tent on it. We were supposed to propel from that point and move further.

In the 49th verse Jesus tells the crowd, “Yes your fathers did have a wilderness experience; however they also experienced death.” Then in the 50th verse, He tells the crowd that through their experience, they will not die.” Hmmmmmm… Interesting huh? One scenario’s end was death and the other’s was life. What I see here is one had a limiting factor, and the other had a LIMITLESS factor. In other words, Jesus was trying to take them to a place where their daddies had never been. He wasn’t out to redo the old thing; He was out to do a new thing, a limitless thing, a boundless thing, a sho’nuff for real stand-out thing. So today, I ask you, what’s your expectation of God? Can you let Him move mightily in your life? Can you let God open up your imagination to the Holy Spirit so that you won’t limit Him through your expectation?

Psalms 62:5 states this: “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.” If we allow His expectation to be our expectation, then we won’t be stuck waiting on Him to do what He did yesterday, last week, and last year. Our expectation of Him will be greater than it was before, and most importantly, it will be limitless just like Him.
