Seedtime and Harvest

2 Mins read

Of all of the seasons, fall tends to be my favorite.  The temperature begins to cool off just a little, so it’s not too hot and not too cold.  The leaves begin to change colors, and the air seems so crisp and clean.  All of the kids head back to school.  Most are excited to share what happened over the summer, wear their new outfits, and, believe it or not, return to a more constructive schedule.  The parents, myself included, are elated as well.  Now they can have more peace and more money because over the summer their kids tried to eat them out of a house and home!

Also, when fall arrives, football fans look forward to rooting for their favorite teams, whether they are pee wee, middle school, high school, college, or professional.  In some cases, as with the university where I teach, the fans look forward to the games, not necessarily to watch the team play, but more so to socialize and see their band show out! (That’s a shout-out to the FAMU Marching 100.)  I mean, fall is just a season of activity.

In addition, fall is the time of year when farmers reap the benefits of the seeds they have sown.  All of the hard work they have put into preparing the soil to receive their seeds and then tending the crops at every step and stage along the way finally pays off.  They reap a harvest!

Well, as a Christian, I believe fall is my favorite season because it reminds me of the promise God made to Noah in Genesis 8:22: “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”  God is faithful to His word.  Have you ever known cold and not hot as well?  Have you ever gone through summer and then not gone through winter too?  Have you ever seen daylight and not experienced the nighttime as well?  It’s as though in each pair, both must take place, so we can really know them individually.  You see, we have to experience cold, so we can know heat, summer so we can know winter, day so we can know night, and………seedtime if we are to know harvest.

It’s interesting that seedtime and harvest is the first pair mentioned and often the last one we think about.  But every day of our lives, we are sowing seeds.  The question we need to ask ourselves is this: What kinds of seeds am I sowing?  Seeds of harmony or seeds of discord?  Seeds of love or seeds of hate?  Seeds of hope or seeds of hopelessness? Seeds of faith or seeds of doubt?  I could go on, but I think you get the point.

When we take this natural concept of “seedtime and harvest” and examine our daily and spiritual walks, we should remember that we don’t have to wait until a particular time of year to reap a harvest.  Every decision, word, deed, or act is a seed we are sowing.  And because we are constantly sowing seeds, we are consistently reaping a harvest.  What type of harvest? Well, that decision is up to you!  Just know this: As long as the earth remains, seedtime and harvest….will not cease!

In His love,

Veronica Yon
