Breaking The Spirit of Misery – Conclusion
Why Did He Come?
Luke 2nd Chapter: 8And there were in the same
country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by
night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them,
and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And
the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of
great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you
is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
It seems fitting to close out this series right before Christmas when we
celebrate the birth of Jesus. However, I would like to get you to take a
"Holy time-out" from the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning and the
planning and ask yourself, "Why did He come?" I mean, really meditate
on this question, "Why did He come?"
Our text is taken from a passage of scripture that many of us are familiar
with. We see the angel of the Lord announce the birth of Jesus. The angel of
the Lord also proclaimed that he had good tidings of great joy which was for
ALL PEOPLE!! (10th). So the first point we should understand is that
Jesus came for ALL! Galatians 3:28 states, " There is neither Jew nor
Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye
are all one in Christ Jesus." We all are on a "level playing surface"
when it comes to Jesus. He loves each of us and came for each of us, but still
the question of "why" remains. The 11th verse of our text
reveals the "three-fold reason" why He came — to be Saviour, Christ
& Lord. So let’s look at these reasons and see how they fit into our lives.
(1) Role As Saviour
Remember the game show Family Feud? Imagine Richard Dawson saying, "Top
three answers on the board, here’s the question… Name a reason that Christ
came?" Most of us would answer, "To save us from hell." This of
course is true, but there is more to it. We are told in 1 Thessalonians 5:9,
"For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our
Lord Jesus Christ." Salvation not only saves us from hell, it also
protects us from the demonic and satanic wrath. It’s not our destiny to go
through hell on our way to hell. Instead, it was, is and always will be God’s
plan for us to enjoy abundant life and eternal life.
(2) Role As Christ
Some may believe that Jesus’ last name is Christ; however this is not so.
The word Christ comes from the Greek word Khristos which means ANOINTED. Uh
oh!!! We’ve tapped into something here!! A few weeks ago, we discussed the
anointing of God (See Thursday Tidbit – Bring Your "A" Game). We
shared with you that the anointing is the "Burden removing, Yoke
destroying power of God" (Isaiah 10:27). From the beginning, Jesus was
Christ (The Anointed One). He was sent to remove our burdens and destroy our
yokes. This baby, who slept in a manger, was the solution to our problems
before our problems manifested. All we’ve got to do is tap into the solution.
(3) Role As Lord
The last, but definitely not least role of Jesus is Lord. However, for many
this is the last and shall I honestly say LEAST role that we put Him in. Here
is a definition for Lord that many will not like, "One who occupies the
position of master over a slave or servant." Many of us want to think that
we are these individuals who are free to do whatever we please. And in some
cases that’s true. Every now and then, our flesh will scream "let’s do
this" — and sometimes we follow that flesh. In these situations, Jesus is
giving us the chance to make Him our Lord, so let’s make the most of this
opportunity. In every situation declare Him your Lord by making the decisions
that are pleasing to Him.
There was more in that package wrapped in swaddling clothes than we could
ever realize. The power to destroy the spirit of misery, the power to destroy
every problem and to bring about every cure. A love that knows no boundary and
has no end. Grace that is more sufficient than we could imagine. So as
Christmas comes and goes we want you to know that Jesus wasn’t born to die; He
was born to rise!!! And because He was born to rise, you were born to rise as
well. He came to complete the covenant so that you would be the head only and
never the tail. Above only and never beneath. To walk in the light and never in
the darkness. To have everlasting joy and not to suffer from the spirit of
misery.
To close, I’ll leave you with this writing from Paul:
"I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy
of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with
longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the
unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one
Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one
faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and
through all, and in you all. But unto every one of us is given grace
according to the measure of the gift of Christ." (Ephesians 4:1-8)
Enjoy the gift that God sent to you — Our Saviour, Christ and Lord —
because our Father cared enough to send only the very best!!!
