Food For Thought – Part I

Genesis 2nd Chapter

16 And the Lord God commanded the man,
“You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you
must not eat from any tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat
of it you will surely die.”

Almost everybody knows the story of the forbidden fruit. But
nobody really thinks about how it relates to today. What it shows us is that
what we choose to eat has had a profound effect on our lives since our very
creation. We also see that the very first mistake that man made was to eat the
wrong thing and it has led to our downfall ever since.  In the beginning, God gave us one rule:
don’t eat from the tree of life. And we see what happened when we chose to
break that rule. What many of us don’t realize is that we are still making the
wrong choices in what we eat.

The food we eat affects every major aspect of our lives.
What we choose to ingest can have profound effects on our moods, energy levels
and overall health. The correct food choices could prevent many of the major
ailments that plague our society today. The problem is that many of us do not
know what foods we should and shouldn’t eat or the amounts. Americans have the
absolute worst diets on the planet. Because of this our instances of cancer,
blood disorders, and obesity are higher than any other nation in the world. And
it could all be corrected if we would just change our eating habits.

Here are a few rules that everyone should know when it comes
to eating.

          1)  At least three meals should be eaten daily, especially breakfast.
Breakfast must be eaten because it begins the body’s metabolism. Metabolism is
the rate at which your body burns calories. Continually missing breakfast causes
your metabolism to become sluggish which can make you more prone to fat gain.

          2)  Meals should be eaten as close to the same
time each day as possible. Never eat before going to bed. Meals should be eaten
an hour and a half before retiring for the evening.

          3)  No more than 30% of your total calories
should come from fat and no more than 10% of your total calories should come
from saturated fat.  Diets too high in
fat can lead to blocked arteries, heart damage, as well as excessive weight
gain.  (More on this coming soon.)

My goal is to insure that all of the Lord’s people have a better understanding
of how food affects their lives and how a change in eating habits can lengthen
the life span and improve the quality of life.
