Is it that comfortable?

Mark 10th Chapter

46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.
47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.
50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.
51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.
52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

If you could get out of every unfavorable situation that you are in right now would you? If you could get out of debt, if you could get out of bondage, if you could get out of sickness, if you could get out of lack, would you?

Quite honestly, I don’t think that most people would. Yes, I said it and I will repeat it. I don’t think most people would. Why? Because getting out of what you are in often comes with a cost. Sure, as long as it’s free and doesn’t cost a thing, everyone on the planet would be “a’ ridin’ that freedom train.” But because it hurts us sometimes to “go through” the steps to liberation, we just stay right where we are. Let’s be real here.

For us to get out of debt, it would take financial discipline. It would probably take giving up those lunch runs we are accustomed to. It would take giving up those mini-shopping sprees we like going on. It would hurt. To lose those pounds you say you want to lose, it’s going to hurt. Yes my brothers and sisters, no more Krispie Kreme doughnuts, even if the hot sign is on. No more late night runs to Baskin Robbins. No more seconds during dinner. It’s going to hurt.

This week, I’m going to share briefly about one of my favorite characters in the bible, Bartimaeus. As Bartimaeus sat by the highway begging, he heard a great commotion from the crowd that was passing by. From this, he found that all this “ruckus” was really because Jesus was with the crowd. At that point, he began to cry out, “Jesus, thou Son of David have mercy on me.” The cries of Bartimaeus were so loud over the crowd that, get this, MANY asked him to be quiet (48th). However, Bartimaeus, being persistent, cried even louder (48th) until He finally got Jesus’ attention. Jesus then stopped and commanded Bartimaeus to be brought to Him (49th).

Now here is where it gets really interesting. After Jesus calls Bartimaeus, the 49th verse tells us this; “And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.” It’s interesting how the “they” in this 49th verse are also the “many” in the 48th verse. In other words, the same people that basically told him “shut up, nobody wants to hear you” were the same ones now telling him “cheer up, because He heard you.”

You see, what makes Bartimaeus one of my favorite characters is that he didn’t care about being everyone’s friend, and he didn’t care about making people comfortable around him. He was going to do whatever it took to get his deliverance. If, that meant being labeled a loud mouthed lunatic then so be it. If that meant hurting a few folks ears, so be it. If that meant stepping on toes and losing friends, so be it. Whatever it took to get out of what He was in, He was going to do it.

So today, my question to you is, “can you do whatever it takes to get out of what you are in?” Or “Is what you are in sooooo comfortable that you can bear to stay in it a little while longer?” Some of us believe that “I’ll get another chance at it,” or “I’ll do it tomorrow,” or “I can start it later.” Well, if that’s your attitude, here is an attitude buster for you about Bartimaeus’ episode. Did you know that this was Jesus’ last journey through Jericho? Now what if Bartimaeus would have said, “Well, I’ll catch Him next time?” If he had taken that attitude, more than likely, we probably would have never heard of him.

However, Bartimaeus knew that timing is everything and with God timing is everything. If He has spoken to you on a matter, then the timing of the matter is everything. If He told you to plant a financial seed today, then do it today because timing is everything. The door that is open today might not be open tomorrow. The blessing He is trying to set you up to receive today might not be available tomorrow. You must step out on faith and follow the word, the guidance, and the instruction that God has given you. He is only trying to get you out of what you’re in. And I pray that you don’t want to stay in whatever it is because truly it can not be – – – that comfortable!
