The Performance

The Performance

Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

Have you ever attended a theatrical performance? I’m sure that if you have and if you arrived early enough, you saw people preparing for the performance. You saw ushers seating the patrons, and you saw “stage-hands” making last minute preparations. However, there is one thing that you probably did not see: the conception of the performance. In other words, you probably weren’t there when the author wrote it or conceived it, but you did see the end result.

To take a theatrical performance from conception to “curtain” is a really big task. Before I understood how monumental this task was, I really did not appreciate the performances that I went to see. I enjoyed them and I was entertained by them, but I did not appreciate the work that went into them. Before, it was really no big deal that someone wrote a script that required actors/actresses, sound people, set designers, etc. to play a role in turning his/her words into a performance. However, now I have a newfound appreciation for this process, and this week’s text is the reason why.

In our text, Paul states the following: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” Paul begins by stating his confidence and trust in this good work that God has already begun. But to this statement, I pose a question: When did God start this good work? The answer lies in Ephesians 1:3-4.

Ephesians 1st Chapter
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

God started the “good work” before the foundation of the world. What I am telling you is God scripted the good work before He physically laid out the very earth we occupy. He wrote a plan of salvation for our lives that ensures our wholeness, our well-ness, and our happiness. He even wrote contingency plans for every possible turn that we could choose that would be contrary to His will and His way. And because He is the faithful God that He is, He is ever moving to ensure that His scripted good work will come to pass.

This is why Paul completed the sixth verse as follows: “he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” Those words God authored before the foundations of the world are the same words He is obligated to until Jesus comes again. If He has to execute His word Himself, He will. If He has to use people to guide you “smack-dab” into your destiny, He will. If He has to dispatch angels to act on your behalf, He will. Whatever is necessary to bring His word from conception to curtain, God is faithful enough to ensure that it happens.

The best advice I can give you is this: “Don’t quit on God.” When you don’t see anything going on, know that preparation is taking place. Know without a doubt that during your every waking moment and even during the sleeping ones, God is getting all the parts and pieces together to make the performance happen. Know that He is on the job for you 24-7-365 and 366, ensuring that the promise will come to pass. And when everything has been taken care of and all the pieces have been put into place, know that you will see the “curtain go up.” Know that you will see His goodness in the land of the living. Know that you will see Him execute the word that was promised to you before the world itself existed.
