I Got It Honest

Study Text – Genesis 9:18-27

Memory Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:9 – For God hath not appointed us to wrath,
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

Have you ever noticed how traits are passed down from generation to
generation? Not only the physical characteristics like hair and eye color but
also non-physical traits such as ungodliness. These non-physical traits are
often the results of excuses like, "My mama and daddy did (or did not do)
this or that so you know – I got it honest." In this week’s text we look
at what we actually do "get it honest."

In the 18th verse we see that the sons of Noah – Shem, Ham & Japheth,
came out of the ark. Also this verse identifies Ham as the father of Canaan.
(Ham is also identified as the father of Canaan in the 22nd verse. This serves
as a signal that something regarding Canaan is about to happen.) In the 19th
verse Noah and his sons began the repopulation of the earth. As Noah began to
farm the land (husbandman) he planted a vineyard.(20th) Noah then partook of
the vineyard and became drunk which resulted in his lying in his tent
naked.(21st) Ham, Noah’s son, went to his father’s tent and saw his father
nakedness. Instead of doing the respectable thing – covering his father, Ham
went to his brothers and told them what he had seen.(22nd) [Again this verse
along with the 18th identifies Ham as the father of Canaan]

Realizing that their father was in a "dishonorable" position, Shem
and Japheth honored their father by covering his nakedness with a garment. Not
only did they cover his nakedness, but they did it in the most respectable way.
They took the garment, placed it on their shoulders, walked in backwards (to
ensure they did not see his nakedness) and covered Noah.(23rd) Noah then awoke
and realized what Ham had done to him. (24th) [This verse also shows us that
Noah focuses on the actions of Ham rather than those of Japheth & Shem;
therefore the punishment of Ham will probably be greater then the blessing of
Shem & Japheth]

In the 25th-27th verses Noah curses Canaan three times:

  1. To be the LOWEST of servants
    to his brothers. (25th)
  2. To be a servant to Shem, his
    uncle.(26th)
  3. To be a servant to Japheth,
    his uncle. (27th)

Because of Noah’s curse on Canaan, Canaan’s lineage was cursed as well.
Canaan’s lineage includes the following [Canaanites, Perrizites, Hitties,
Jebusites, Amorites & Girgashites] which were doomed nations. We know this
because God would later tell Moses (Ex. 23:23) that he would send an angel
ahead of Moses to wipe out all of these nations within their own lands while
Moses’ people occupy them. This shows us that Noah, who was just a man, cursed
several generations of his own offspring.

So, why did Noah’s curse have the outcome that it did? Probably because (1)
Jesus could not intercede on Canaan’s behalf and (2) Canaan accepted the curse.

(1) – Jesus Intercedes: Galatians 3:13-14 states – Christ redeemed us from
the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written:
"Cursed is everyone who is hung on the tree." He redeemed us in order
that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ
Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

This passage of scripture tells
us that Christ redeemed (saved) us from the curse of God (Death [Genesis 3:19])
by becoming OUR SUBSTITUTE! If we had been hung on the cross all we would have
received was death, but because Christ took up this curse we gained eternal
life. The reason the Gentiles were mentioned in this passage is to show us that
Christ’s death redeems ALL nations and ALL will benefit from Christ’s death –
however it is up to us to get this salvation. Now if Christ redeemed us from
God’s curse then surely we are saved from any man-made curse.

(2) – Canaan’s accepted this curse even though he did NO WRONG! If you will
recall it was his father Ham who did wrong and yet Canaan was the one that was
cursed AND the nations that came from his lineage. So why did Noah curse
Canaan? That I don’t know, but the a significance of this event is that a MAN
brought forth a curse on several nations.

Now here is a serious question for you – Do you have the power to lay curses
on others – especially on those you love? The answer, unfortunately, is YES. If
you don’t believe me here are two examples:

CURSE: Parents tell their kids, "That’s so dumb",
"That’s really stupid" or "You dummy."
RESULT: The child may do poorly in school due to low
self-esteem. Then that child’s children may do poorly. Why? Because they will
believe, "well mama or daddy didn’t do well so I guess I can’t
either."
CURSE:Single/Divorce/Separated/Unequally Yoked Parents tell
their kids, "You’re just like your mother/father – that idiot!"
RESULT:The child will do idiotic things like use drugs and
alcohol. In this case, the parent grants the child a "license for
idiocy."

Remember we don’t get curses honest but here are a few things that we DO get
honest:

  • We get the image of God
honest because we were created in His image. (Genesis 1:26)
  • We get Salvation honest
because it was the reason Jesus died for us. (1 Thes 5:9)
  • We get Abundant Life honest
because it was the reason Jesus came to this earth. (John 10:10)
  • We get Love honest because
it is of God. (1 John 4:8)
  • We get Patience honest
because it perfects our Godly walk. (James 1:2-4)
  • We get Holiness honest
because He who called us is Holy. (1 Peter 1:15)

Let’s get on track and break these curses by closing out in prayer,
"Lord, as of this day we break ALL curses passed down from generation to
generation by the power of Jesus that worketh within us."

Now, if you have the Lord working within you (If ya’ Saved) then you have
the power to break ANY curse. However if you have something else working within
you like Jack Daniels – well that prayer you said ain’t worth….. well Jack!

Your salvation in Jesus is the power that worketh to break curses. These
curses are passed down easily from Generation to Generation. Therefore, today
YOU MUST claim your victory in Christ Jesus. Get saved if you are not saved so
that you can break these curses. Get out of that LOST CAUSE Category and start
saying "I am Going To Be (A Better Christian, More Successful, More
Prosperous, A Better Parent, or Better At Whatever You Want To Be Better At) by
the power that worketh(constantly works) within me because Jesus paid ALL the
costs for me to be the very Best of the Best!"
